Gaynell Fuchs (Ms. Nellie)

"Having grown up in Hawaii, Gaynell developed a passion for education during her studies at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Graduating in 2018 with a BA in Communication and an Educational Studies Certificate, Gaynell gained valuable insights into child development and educational theory, which she now applies to her Montessori-inspired approach to preschool education. With experience working with children from preschool to second grade, Gaynell has cultivated a deep understanding of how to create engaging and enriching learning environments. Collaborating with Ms. Cara over the past 6 years, Gaynell has further refined her teaching skills and embraces the principles of the Montessori method. Committed to fostering independence, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning, Gaynell is dedicated to providing a nurturing and stimulating environment where every child can thrive and reach their full potential. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her daughter, fiancé and French bulldog exploring Oregon."

Max Markewitz

University of Oregon Support Staff

Hi I’m Max! I have been working at Firefly since 2024. I grew up in the Concordia neighborhood just a few blocks away from the school. In my spare time I love to play piano, dance, and be outdoors! I love working with kids, and being a part of their preschool years. I have had so many amazing experiences being a teacher at Firefly, and I look forward to having many more!  I am beginning my second year at the University of Oregon, but I am excited to continue my work at Firefly on breaks and summers throughout the next few years!

Sara Lockman (Ms. Sara)

Substitute Teacher

Sara is so excited to be an assistant teacher at Firefly! She loves children's fresh perspectives on life and loves to see them grow. She has been a Girl Scout leader for 11 years.
Here's what Emily Foster a Sabin kindergarten teacher had to say,
"Sara was so great with the kids. She always had a smile on her face! She was patient and encouraged kids to do their best. The kids loved having her in our room, and so did I."
Sara is currently a student of psychology at Portland State University. She plans to continue her education and become an RN. She has two children and has been an active member of the Portland community for over 20 years. She loves to hike, camp, travel, and share stories with friends she meets along the way.

Patch

Emotional Support Dog

At Firefly Montessori, we place a strong emphasis on social and emotional development—and we’re delighted to have our school dog, Patch, as part of that mission. Patch is a mini-bernedoodle who was specially bred to be a therapy dog. He is three years old and shows a wonderful, gentle temperament with the children.
As a hypoallergenic breed, Patch is a great fit for our school community. He is fully vaccinated and well cared for. Children love having him nearby—whether they’re seeking comfort during a tough moment, enjoying the calming presence of a furry friend, or cozying up with him to read a book.
Patch adds warmth, companionship, and emotional support to our classroom, and we are so excited to share this special bond with the children.
